July update – sweetcorn

Production is superb now. Still very little rain, but warm weather means rapid growth. Last year I lost all my sweetcorn to marauding badgers.  I read that the only way to stop badgers was to keep the electric fence very low. I have done that – and so far it has worked!

But early in the month we had very strong winds – up to 116km/h which ripped through the garden,  uprooting a few chilli plants, toppling over aubergines and peppers as well at the sweetcorn.  Fortunately I was able to stake up all except one chilli plants and about 8 sweetcorn plants.

Now, end of July, I am harvesting delicious sweetcorn.

I’m also harvesting lots of other vegetables – here a basketful picked for making soup!
