First Frost

First frost on Tuesday, October 31st, and again this morning.   So glad I harvested the butternut, as they just collapse in a sorry heap even though it was a light frost. Dahlias in the picking garden are finished too, but now I can clear everything away and finish the manure spreading in all the quadrants of the pumpkin patch. Bottom right of this photo is rhubarb which has been incredibly productive (and tasty!) this year.  Grass is looking gloriously green and we are still mowing.
Fennel and celery, both close to the pigsties, coped with the frost. Neither cope with the very cold weather we can expect in mid winter, but if I can keep them going just a little longer I will be happy.  Behind the fennel, the peppers are looking worse for wear, and behind that, the cucumbers are burnt to a crisp.
Ah well, winter is here and I’ve got more clearing up to do!
